We Rebuilt AI Food Search From the Ground Up. Here's Why It's More Accurate Than Ever.

Logging food shouldn't feel like data entry. That's why MacrosFirst has long let you find foods just by describing your meal, scanning a photo, or pasting a recipe. Today, we're taking a big step forward. We've rebuilt AI Food Search from the ground up, and it's dramatically more powerful, flexible, and accurate at finding the foods you actually ate.
Here's what changed, why it matters, and what's coming next.
The problem with most "AI" food tracking apps
About two years ago, the app Cal AI unleashed a wave of new nutrition apps that promised to track your food with AI. Snap a photo, and out come your calories and macros. It feels magical, until you look closely at the numbers.
The catch is that most of these apps rely on AI to do everything, including inventing the nutrition data itself. AI is genuinely good at recognizing that there's a chicken breast and some rice on your plate. It's far less reliable when you ask it to tell you how many calories, grams of protein, carbs, fat, and other nutrients are in that meal. The result often looks confident, giving the illusion of precision, but it doesn't match reality.
When your goal depends on accurate numbers, being confidently wrong is a real problem.
How MacrosFirst does it differently
MacrosFirst uses AI for what it's great at: identifying what's in your meal. It then pulls the actual nutrition data from real foods in our 100% verified food database. No AI hallucinations. You get the speed and convenience of AI with the accuracy you can actually trust.
In other words: AI figures out what you ate. Our verified database provides the numbers. We don't let AI guess your macros.
Smarter food matching
Our first version of AI Search worked by identifying the foods in your AI search and then grabbing the top result from our database for each food. It was fast, but the single top result wasn't always the best match for what the AI found.
The new AI Search is much better about finding the right food:
It searches our entire database, including Core Foods, which contains the most complete, reliable nutrition information.
It reviews the full search results for each food in your query, not just the first result, and chooses the foods that best match what you described.
The payoff is simple. The foods AI Search returns are far more likely to be the ones you meant.
See exactly what's in your meal
This is where the new Photo Search really shines. Instead of trying to match an entire complex dish to a single food item in the database, AI Search first identifies the foods on your plate and then breaks each one down into its individual ingredients.

Take a photo of a chicken Caesar salad. AI Search doesn't just query our food database for “chicken Caesar salad”. Instead, it identifies the chicken, romaine, parmesan, croutons, and dressing. It then matches each ingredient to a food in our verified database and adds the nutrients together to calculate the totals for the whole dish.
It can even account for ingredients you can't see, but that are almost always there, like the lime in guacamole or the oil in a stir-fry, so your numbers reflect what you really ate.
This gives you two big advantages:
More accurate results. Matching individual ingredients is far more reliable and precise than matching a whole complex dish at once.
Full transparency. You can see exactly how AI Search arrived at the numbers, then edit or remove any ingredient, or even split the dish out into its individual ingredients on your log. The totals update automatically. No other app shows its work like this.
Add your own context for even better results
You can also tell AI Search a little about what it's looking at, and it'll use that information to sharpen its results. Snap a bowl of yogurt with something crumbled on top? Add a note that those are cacao nibs. Want to make sure it gets the sauce right? Describe what’s in it. That extra context helps AI Search identify the right ingredients and get your numbers even closer to reality.

Never hit a dead end
Sometimes you'll eat something that isn't in our database yet. The old AI Search would simply tell you, "No foods found." The new AI Search handles it gracefully. It researches the food on the web and creates it for you, estimating its calories, protein, carbs, and fat.
And we're always upfront about it. Any food generated this way gets a ✨ added to its name, so you can tell at a glance which foods came from our verified database and which were AI-generated.
You're never left guessing about where a number came from. These foods work like any other. Adjust the serving size, edit them, or remove them. And just like Quick Track foods, they're created just for that log and not added to your Saved Foods.
Why this matters
Accurate tracking is the difference between progress and frustration. By combining AI's strengths with our verified food data, and by showing you exactly how every number was calculated, the new AI Food Search gives you results you can trust, with less effort than ever.
More accuracy. More transparency. Less manual entry. That's the whole point.
What's coming next
The new AI Food Search is just the first step in a much bigger vision for MacrosFirst AI. In the months ahead, we're expanding it to do far more than find foods, including:
Recipe recommendations – ask for a recipe and get one that fits your goals.
Nutrition insights – get answers to questions like "what am I low on?" and "what should I tweak to hit my targets?"
Deeper reporting – spot trends and patterns in your nutrition over time.
A conversational AI assistant – built right into the app to help you log, learn, and make progress.
